Point 21 Sound for Opening Titles

The sound for our opening title was going to be a mixture of soundtrack and voice-over narration. It starts with narration in the playground scenes and then cuts to a motownish/funky track when you see the male actor much older walking down the road. The sound stops when he falls over on the zebra crossing, so narration can occur. Whilst walking in to his office, calm music is playing to emphasis  the office job, it fades once he recieves the invitation from his secretary and dialogue takes place between the secretary and Gordon Twiginam.

Point 20 Storyboard

Hopefully this story board allows you to establish what is occuring in our opening scene of our film.

Point 19 Narrative Theories

Point 18 Story Arc

  • The film starts with a young man narrating over the top of the opening titles. He is giving the audience background information into his life mainly about how he was bullied in primary school and wasn't very popular.  We are given the oppression that he like a girl in this act.
  • It then goes into the present day where he is much older and shows him to be successful. Although physically he has changed into a man his appearance is still dorky and his social skills still lacking within the office environment. Whilst at work he receives an invitation to his High School Reunion and his past comes back to haunt him.
  • He visits his parents on the weekend to receive advise, they give him encouragement to return to high school. The whole high school reunion adventure takes part through out the weekend.
  • He arrives at the hotel and the first group of people he meets is the gang of bullies, who pestered him at school. They haven't matured at all resulting in mocking of the main character as he has been tripped up by one of them.
  • The film then goes on to show the whole weekend. The main character determined to impress ends up in a lot of embarrassing situations.  The main embarrassment is when he tries to approach his old high school crush. However through all these embarrassing moments and a large disruption within the story line, the main character ends up with his high school crush. Resulting in the group of bullies leaving him alone.

Point 15 Pearl and Dean

Pearl and Dean find suitable advertising space before the start of the film.
For example if an action movie was playing you would expect to see a few car commercials as the target audience is mostly likely to be male and be around the age in which they can drive or purchase a car.

My genre is Drama Comedy and I was expect my target audience group created by Pearl and Dean to be the 15+ category. This links into my audience research of Townies, Rahs and Trendies.

Displayed on Pearl and Deans Website

This extract from Pearl and Dean website shows that my target group is the largest cinemagoers, especifically females. The GAP stands for Guareenteed Audience Package, this means the majority of the people to view these movies will come for this area. The use of the class shows that it is mostly upmarket who go to the cinema on a regular occasion.

Point 11 Little Miss Sunshine

Key Shot 1

Shot 1 shows the main star, Olive in an extreme close up, the emotion shown is concentration This is important as the audience can see that she is a young girl with a adult concentration.

Key Shot 2

This shot is a close up of Olive practising her reaction to winning the pageant contest. This shows the audience the young inspiring girl wants to be a beauty Queen.

Key Shot 3

The shot of the beauty queen shows the contrast between Olive's family's lifestyle and the lifestyle of a beauty queen being glamorous.

Key Shot 4

The audience is introduced to Olive's dad, we are given the impression he is a hard working character who wants to provide for his family the best he can.

Key Shot 5

Olive's brother doesn't say anything in his shot however is  doing some exercise, which shows concentration and possibly he is made to feel the need to take care of his appearance.

Key Shot 6

The sixth shot is of Olive's grandfather, who is seen taking heroin, this suggests to the audience he is not a  great influence to Olive, giving the audience someone to criticise.

Key Shot 7
This shot shows Olive's mum smoking whilst driving this shows she doesn't lead a healthy lifestyle which could be due to a stressful life. This allows the audience to judge her relationship with the family.

Key Shot 8

This shot shows (Olive's dads brother) Uncle Frank in a wheelchair with a gown on in a hospital. This suggests to the audience he is incapable of looking after himself because of the hospital environment.

Key Shot 9

This close up of Uncle Frank shows the audience the emotion of exhaustion and gives the audience a sense of  a deeper meaning behind his admission in to hospital.

Point 10 Opening scene of Juno analysised

Camera Shots

In the beginning of Juno there is a close up of her feet walking followed by a pan, mid shot of her walking away, and then a tracking long shot of her walking towards the camera. This shows Juno to be deep in thought as she is walking effortlessly around the surrounding area she knows well. It tells the audience that she has possibly grown up here and feels comfortable in her surroundings. This is then confirmed to the audience, as there is a close up of her face with a smirk. The tilt, low angle shot of the electrical cables shows the area to be established, a mid shot shows houses helping the audience to recognise the surrounding scenery to be the suburbs. There is an over the head, zooming shot showing her walking along the street, this shows the audience of her vulnerability as you can recognise she is a teenager and not an adult. We receive a closer look at Juno as a teenager with a tilt that starts from the ground to her eye line. Through most of the shots in the opening we see Juno walking this may be to replicate her journey in life or to show the surroundings to the audience in an interesting way and meet the main character Juno. We know Juno is the main character as she is the only person in the shots; this keeps the audience focused in finding out her story is.

Editing

The editing used is slow and it is in time with her walking creating a relax pace to the beginning of the movie and entices you at the end of the opening as to what major disruption is going to occur. There are a lot of straight cuts with zooms and dolly zooms showing her turning corners and makes the viewing more interesting to the audience as they see Juno from many angles, so they can recognise her comfortably before meeting other characters.

 Sound

The entire opening scene has a sound track with complements the pace of her walk and relaxed attitude. The lyrics of the soundtrack are representing the story as the couple end up together. Here are some lyrics.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

The genre of the movie comes across in the song as carefree and in love. This helps the audience to identify with the film as many have possibly felt these feelings before, creating a stronger empathetic feeling.

Mise – en – scene

The opening scene is all animated with a grainy colour wash effect creating an effect of everything is not as simple as shown, creating mystery to the opening as she is walking but we have no idea where to.

The settings complement the storyline as a teenager in the suburbs shows she still lives with her parents and younger siblings. This helps the audience to identify her background and lifestyle making it easier for them to relate to her.

Camera Shots

The opening shot to 21 Jump Street s a zoom high angle of people exiting the school bus, we then follow one of the main characters by a tracking mid shot walking towards the school. These shots are chosen to introduce to the audience the main character so they can identify him in the crowds around the high school. The audience is given a timeline as there is a zooming close up towards a prom poster this allows the audience to follow the characters as they grow up, and see how there social life changes. An over the shoulder shot shows the main character talking to his next door neighbours asking her to the prom, we then have a close up of her reaction. The audience feels some what embarrassed for the main character as there is a close up of the jocks laughing at the situation, we as the audience emphasis for the main character. After the conversation there is a mid shot of the 3 people, the main character, jock and the girl. This helps the audience to see the social hierarchy in the high school, We identify that the main character is of the lower hierarchy of the high school, which makes the audience feel pity towards him.

Editing

Through the opening scene the editing is fast paced with jump cuts of the main character walking towards school and through the corridors, this is to fit in with the music for this scene, it gives the main character a persona of being the cool person at school. This creates humour for the audience as he does not seem to be in any stereotypical high school group, except possibly the outcasts. During the dialogue the editing is slowed so the audience can understand what is occurring. The use of zoom occurs at the bus, poster and during the conversation, this is so more detail can be achieved from the camera position giving the audience more detail in which they can distinguish what is happening in the scene.

Sound

In the opening scene non - diegetic sound is used to help create a persona of the main character. The sound track accompanies the image in the scene of the character looking like Eminem. This create a humour aspect as Eminem is well known and popular however the main character is neither, but aspire to be like him as he dresses and has bleached his hair to obtain the look of Eminem.

Mise - en - scene

The use of props such as the school bus, posters, school bags and lockers helps the audience to identify the surroundings before even seeing the set of a high school. The use of miss - en - scene help to create a more realistic idea of the story line as the audience can believe it and relate to it
