Point 10 Opening scene of Juno analysised

Camera Shots

In the beginning of Juno there is a close up of her feet walking followed by a pan, mid shot of her walking away, and then a tracking long shot of her walking towards the camera. This shows Juno to be deep in thought as she is walking effortlessly around the surrounding area she knows well. It tells the audience that she has possibly grown up here and feels comfortable in her surroundings. This is then confirmed to the audience, as there is a close up of her face with a smirk. The tilt, low angle shot of the electrical cables shows the area to be established, a mid shot shows houses helping the audience to recognise the surrounding scenery to be the suburbs. There is an over the head, zooming shot showing her walking along the street, this shows the audience of her vulnerability as you can recognise she is a teenager and not an adult. We receive a closer look at Juno as a teenager with a tilt that starts from the ground to her eye line. Through most of the shots in the opening we see Juno walking this may be to replicate her journey in life or to show the surroundings to the audience in an interesting way and meet the main character Juno. We know Juno is the main character as she is the only person in the shots; this keeps the audience focused in finding out her story is.

Editing

The editing used is slow and it is in time with her walking creating a relax pace to the beginning of the movie and entices you at the end of the opening as to what major disruption is going to occur. There are a lot of straight cuts with zooms and dolly zooms showing her turning corners and makes the viewing more interesting to the audience as they see Juno from many angles, so they can recognise her comfortably before meeting other characters.

 Sound

The entire opening scene has a sound track with complements the pace of her walk and relaxed attitude. The lyrics of the soundtrack are representing the story as the couple end up together. Here are some lyrics.

All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.

The genre of the movie comes across in the song as carefree and in love. This helps the audience to identify with the film as many have possibly felt these feelings before, creating a stronger empathetic feeling.

Mise – en – scene

The opening scene is all animated with a grainy colour wash effect creating an effect of everything is not as simple as shown, creating mystery to the opening as she is walking but we have no idea where to.

The settings complement the storyline as a teenager in the suburbs shows she still lives with her parents and younger siblings. This helps the audience to identify her background and lifestyle making it easier for them to relate to her.

Camera Shots

The opening shot to 21 Jump Street s a zoom high angle of people exiting the school bus, we then follow one of the main characters by a tracking mid shot walking towards the school. These shots are chosen to introduce to the audience the main character so they can identify him in the crowds around the high school. The audience is given a timeline as there is a zooming close up towards a prom poster this allows the audience to follow the characters as they grow up, and see how there social life changes. An over the shoulder shot shows the main character talking to his next door neighbours asking her to the prom, we then have a close up of her reaction. The audience feels some what embarrassed for the main character as there is a close up of the jocks laughing at the situation, we as the audience emphasis for the main character. After the conversation there is a mid shot of the 3 people, the main character, jock and the girl. This helps the audience to see the social hierarchy in the high school, We identify that the main character is of the lower hierarchy of the high school, which makes the audience feel pity towards him.

Editing

Through the opening scene the editing is fast paced with jump cuts of the main character walking towards school and through the corridors, this is to fit in with the music for this scene, it gives the main character a persona of being the cool person at school. This creates humour for the audience as he does not seem to be in any stereotypical high school group, except possibly the outcasts. During the dialogue the editing is slowed so the audience can understand what is occurring. The use of zoom occurs at the bus, poster and during the conversation, this is so more detail can be achieved from the camera position giving the audience more detail in which they can distinguish what is happening in the scene.

Sound

In the opening scene non - diegetic sound is used to help create a persona of the main character. The sound track accompanies the image in the scene of the character looking like Eminem. This create a humour aspect as Eminem is well known and popular however the main character is neither, but aspire to be like him as he dresses and has bleached his hair to obtain the look of Eminem.

Mise - en - scene

The use of props such as the school bus, posters, school bags and lockers helps the audience to identify the surroundings before even seeing the set of a high school. The use of miss - en - scene help to create a more realistic idea of the story line as the audience can believe it and relate to it
